The people refer to you as a saint, but I do not know of your good works. Every year, on the same calendar date, you trick me into believing that there is a pot of gold, if I honor your Holiday. Oh, maybe that’s another Holiday! Anyway, I know your game, and you won’t get me this year, for I am single!

Nevertheless, Valentine’s Day is a symbolic day devoted to love, but what does it need for survival? Does it expect a kiss under the mistletoe or a wrapped gift under the tree? Oh yeah, again, that’s another Holiday. But, have we not nurtured February 14 enough, for it should possess a full grown beard by now, if it is a man! If Valentine be my lady, her beauty would be right for a crystal anniversary; that is 15th years if someone is counting.

And how did you become a shopping Holiday? Men flock to the stores with good intentions, and unfortunately, do not always buy the right gift, in honor of you. If they had bought something with a diamond or gold in it, then the sofa might be lonely today. I guess!

Even so, this is the most competitive day of the year. Actually, it should become an Olympic Event. Men must outdo their lovers’ exes and current friends. Before you comment, let me explain! Who hasn’t heard the following: he was more romantic, he bought better gifts, or look what Ronnie bought Samantha! Ok, I don’t know anyone named Samantha and maybe I’ve just gave some unwarranted advice. Will you find the best gift for your significant other? Otherwise, you better say the right things; and if you like, I will write you something for a fee.

Can this day survive without someone purchasing a tennis bracelet from Tiffany & Co.? Maybe Valentine would like to respond! But, he is too busy counting the money due to his namesake. That should keep Valentine occupied for another 365 days when he returns again.

I do have a secret confession to make. I am not mad or bitter at you, sweet Valentine, for we all have to earn a living, even during a recession. However, goodbye ole friend, but I do not recall when we were good friends.

Soul Searching Poem

The milkman no longer delivers to my home, even though the front door is never closed. But, year after year, he still collects that Christmas gift waiting at my step.

The windows keep giving me dirty looks because they yearn for some fresh paint, although my salty lips do not bring comfort and keep them satisfied.

The store manager pulls me aside to explain the troubling news, even though this store is foreign to me. Again, my credit card is declined, so that ring must remain on display.

Her scent has never been stronger, even if our distance is greater than 1,000 stop signs. Still, the pretty flowers remind me of the days of ole when happiness guided my every step.

The road to recovery is unforgiving. My soul no longer distinguishes between life and death, since the day the milkman stole my love.

The nightmares of her scent cause eternal grief. Life used to be pleasure to know all of its joys, but it quickly turned hostile on me.

The soul, however, knows no limits. It knows how to heal faster than the beat of an irregular heartbeat.

Unfortunately, the character Jay Gatsby could be more than a story, if the horrific thoughts of the deserted become one man’s reality.

Some people call today, Superbowl Sunday. Later on this evening, the Pittsburgh Steelers will face the Arizona Cardinals in Tampa Bay, Florida for the right to be named Superbowl XLIII Champion. During the game, most of us will be glued to our seats, for there is great anticipation. Yet the game’s outcome is still uncertain, regardless of what is being said by NFL analysts and Las Vegas odd makers. We just don’t know the outcome of the game, and it would be irresponsible to assume anything, for upsets can occur because of a missed tackle, blown coverage in the defensive secondary or a penalty, such as offsides or pass interference. So, who will be today’s Superbowl MVP? Who will win the game? Your guess is as good as mine.

Back in late December, many so-called NFL analysts and fans said the Arizona Cardinals should not have made the NFL Playoffs. Some people were calling for the rules to be changed next year because the Arizona Cardinals made the playoffs, with a 9-7 regular season record, in such a weak division as the NFC West. However, the Arizona Cardinals have exceeded most of our expectations, and they have silenced their critics by making it to the Superbowl.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is faced with a similar challenge. He must wow a crowd that is gathered in a synagogue in Capernaum. Now, it is unclear from Mark’s Gospel who invites Jesus to speak, or if Jesus makes the request to speak here. Nevertheless, Jesus is ready to give the speech of a lifetime, on a stage larger than the Superbowl. Remember, this is the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, and the importance of giving a speech in a synagogue is unquestionable. By speaking in the synagogue, you can become an oversight sensation if you deliver a Word in the tradition of the prophets like Elijah or Isaiah. However word of your great teaching would have spread slower in Jesus’ time than today because we have CNN, MSNBC, Fox News and instant e-mails at our disposals, and not people riding on camels and donkeys as means to transmit news stories.

Can we find a speech that compares with the stage set for Jesus? I believe the answer is no, but we need to come up with a speech just to draw a parallel to Jesus’ impending speech. Well, in 2004, Illinois State Senator Barack Obama, while running for the U.S. Senate, had the opportunity to give the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. Giving the keynote address is a once in a lifetime opportunity that can either elevate your stature in American politics or cause you to disappear. As we know, now President Obama gave a speech that night that echoed hope not only around that auditorium but around the world, for he talked about “One America” and many people were amazed and wondered immediately if he could run for President, one day. We do know the rest of the story!

Prior to any speech, there is much preparation. The speech has to be edited for grammar and style; the speaker must practice the speech to make sure that he or she can eloquently deliver the message. Hopefully by the time the speech is given, the speaker and speech writers have worked out the kinks.

Let us imagine for a second that Jesus is warming up for this speech at Capernaum. Maybe Jesus decides to hold a dress rehearsal with his disciples? No, I am not saying Jesus needs to practice. However, Jesus could desire the opportunity to show his disciples some pointers about posture or tone. Or, maybe Jesus tells Peter, “Don’t worry, I got this man.” “You keep an eye on James and John, the sons of Zebedee.” For in the verses prior to today’s Gospel, in the Book of Mark, Jesus calls some of his disciples to follow him: Simon (Peter), Andrew, James and John. So when today’s Gospel states “they” went to Capernaum,” there is no mystery who “they” are, for the reference applies to Jesus and to the disciples that I previously mentioned.

But unfortunately, today’s Gospel gives no indication of the disciples’ role in this story. Therefore, we are left wondering, with more questions than answers. Could Jesus have brought the disciples to be his Sergeant of Arms? Or, did Jesus have the desire for his disciples to see how to teach the crowd? Again, your guess is as good as mine.

In any case, the words of Jesus at Capernaum also remain a mystery. The Gospel of Mark makes no effort to help us to understand what is on Jesus’ mind. We do, however, know that Jesus enters the synagogue and teaches. But Jesus not only teaches the people, but he also amazes the crowd.

The people are so enlightened by Jesus’ words that the Bible says, “For he taught them as having one authority, and not as the scribes. “ The people of Capernaum have never heard one teach quite like Jesus. If they could have, the people might have been tempted to call others to hear His teachings, but they might have missed something. And you do not want to miss a word from Jesus. The Biblical words of Jesus in Scriptures are less than the words you can find on the internet of any living or dead U.S. President. But Jesus’ words are considered to be the foundation of good moral teachings, even among liberal institutions of learning.

To me, the above referenced statement about the scribes is not a put down, if you are a scribe. As you already know, the scribes are responsible for interpreting the Law of Moses, the Torah. In spite of this, the scribes are known to disagree with one another, on various topics. Maybe the scribes have a fundamental disagreement over the importance of “fleeing from Egypt,” in the Exodus story? Remember, these scribes represent today’s religious scholars who teach at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc. The scribes are no religious slouches, but they do not possess the wisdom that Jesus has at His disposal.

Jesus also makes it know that He is not a one-hit wonder! He shows mercy to an unclean spirit in their midst. Instead of condemning the spirit to the depths of Hell or destroying it on command, Jesus says,”Be silent and come out of him!” The spirit obeys and says no more; the people in the synagogue are once again amazed by the power of Jesus. There is no mistaking Jesus for a one hit wonder like the Sugar Hill Gang, who became famous because of “Rapper’s Delight” with the candy like album cover in 1979. Jesus assures the crowd by His actions that he will not fade away like the rapper Skee-Lo, who in 1995 made a song called “I Wish.” In the song Skee-Lo wanted to be a little bit taller…oh well. And in 2000, Baha Men released a song called “Who Let the Dogs Out?” Have we seen Baha Men since? My point is that Jesus has the formula to stay on top where others have failed.

Now, let’s go back to the unclean spirit. Your enemies or your rivals can know more about you than your family members do. These envious and sometimes plotting individuals want to beat you to a job promotion, a position of leadership within an organization that you are a member of, or to the top of your class in school. They watch your every move. They hope to find your weakness. These people might even lie on you just to anger you. They want you to loose your cool, so that they can take advantage of the situation. Therefore, seeking revenge is not the answer, for many have been thrown out of school for fighting, and many adults are awaiting sentences because someone said or did something that affected them. Learn to walk away from the strife, so that your rivals give up. For in today’s Gospel, Jesus does not to throw a punch or ask for angels from Heaven to protect him from the unclean spirit. The unclean spirit already knows who Jesus is and what Jesus can do to it! So remember, your enemies and rivals pay attention to what you know and what you can do because they recognize that you continue to have a faith-filled experience with Jesus.

The people at Capernaum did not want to see Jesus go. If you read ahead to verses 42 and 43 of this chapter, the people try to prevent Jesus from leaving. Yet, Jesus’ ministry is to proclaim the Gospel to all, not some. Since Jesus has given us an example to follow, so must we take up a ministry of faith and spread it anywhere God leads us.

A good man should desire to be defined by more than his body, intellect or wealth. He sees himself as a man first, a spect of God‘s Creation, and above all, the ruler of his philosophical and spiritual mind.

A good man works within the confines of the law to make a living and life better for those outside of himself. He does not put perishable desires before his family or God, nor will he ever complain without first attempting to find a solution to the mayhem and mess.

A good man is a commodity in this world. He is free of corruption, unable to be bought and would not resort to trickery to win an argument. Because of his goodness, he is presented with a multitude of temptations; however, he has more value for his freedom, family and control of his mind.

A good man loves all of God’s children, even if he does not known them by name, and when he prays, everyone of them is included. He wishes goodwill to all, both friends and foes, and rejoices in everyone’s happiness.

A good man realizes that he must die, in order to better understand God‘s Plan, yet he desires to be an instrument of goodness all the days of his life. Unlike most, he believes that he can be made better because of his daily understanding of God’s love.

We look upward hoping to see a glimmer of hope running across God’s sky. Yet, if you are fortunate, you might find an angel here on earth in the form of a woman of immense beauty.

Before her smile, I had long forgotten the allure of a woman. However, she now occupies more than my heart. Even today, the sight of her is an electrifying experience that I owe only to fate.

Our lives can bring turbulent storms if you do not step aside and pray for something more. And even when the world and all of its riches are within the rear view mirror, I pray that this angel’s smile reaches my soul.

Home is anywhere she might be, and in her presence, the worries of this world become secondary concerns. Therefore, life has been grand since this angel fell from God’s sky.

Who knew what was good, until good left us! Life is but a grand piano that you never know when it needs a tuning. Scolding water burns our skin, while death brings life as we know it to an end.

Life is a marathon that starts with the introduction of the Greek Pantheon and ends somewhere know only by the gods. In victory and in defeat, we salute the forces of the sky out of respect and the opportunity to do battle.

Our lives are more than just breathing. It is a journey beyond the boundaries of oneself and into the realm of the spiritual divide. We attempt to find ambrosia, even if the gods deny it or hide it.

Where is our place in this world? We soar the sky with limitations and cannot travel the ends of the earth without making some reservations. Yet, as humans, we enjoy being at the beckoning of the gods who know us best.
